Implementation of carbon reduction project from 2017

Carbon reduction support for industrial complex tenant companies

The national industrial complex, which has played an important role in revitalizing the local economy by driving industrial development, economic growth, and job creation in Korea for the past 50 years, is undergoing major changes. This is because the paradigm shift of industrial complexes is inevitable to respond to the rapid changes in the industrial environment such as global low growth, weakening of free trade, the slowdown of key industries, and the 4th industrial revolution.

Although 1,246 industrial complexes nationwide are trying to change in many ways, they are especially focusing on carbon reduction. As ‘2050 carbon neutrality’ emerges as a new global paradigm, global demands and standards for the realization of carbon neutrality throughout society are increasing.

According to the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation (Industrial Complex Corporation) on the 7th, industrial complexes accounted for 83.5% of energy use in the industrial sector and 76.6% of greenhouse gas emissions as of 2019. Accordingly, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Industrial Complex Corporation are spurring support for eco-friendly facilities of non-institutional companies that are not subject to legal greenhouse gas reduction.

The Ministry of Industry and Industrial Complex Corporation started the ‘industrial complex greenhouse gas reduction project’ in 2017, and as a result of the participation of 319 companies until this year, 14,432 tons of carbon dioxide have been reduced. Reducing 1 ton of carbon dioxide has the effect of planting trees in an area of 926 m2 (280 pyeong).

From May to October last year, industrial gas manufacturing company 'Sunjin Environment Co., Ltd.' located in Saenggok Resource Circulation Specialty Complex in Gangseo-gu, Busan, conducted 'Demonstration of Refrigerant Refrigerant Recovery and Regenerated Refrigerant Charging Service for Industrial Complex Vehicles'. Supported. The purpose of this project is to reduce the emission of waste refrigerant from refrigeration facilities through the ‘vehicle-mounted waste refrigerant recovery vehicle’, while safely recovering the waste refrigerant and supplying renewable refrigerant to save energy and reduce greenhouse gases. As a result of carrying out this project, it was found that the advanced environment had the effect of reducing 910.9 tons of carbon dioxide per year in greenhouse gases.

‘Hanjin Chemical’, a fine chemical material producer located in the Onsan Industrial Complex in Ulsan, also received great help from the waste refrigerant recovery vehicle with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Industrial Complex Corporation. This workplace requires refrigeration equipment, so periodic refrigerant replacement is required. The problem was that when replacing the refrigerant, the equipment had to be stopped for a long time, which would soon lead to production loss, which was a burden for the company. Kim Jin-young, director of Hanjin Chemical, said, “With the waste refrigerant recovery vehicle, the refrigerant is quickly recovered and replaced, so that the work that previously took 1-2 days can be completed in 2 hours. There are many points, and I hope that these facilities can be supported by many companies.”

With the support of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, 38 companies are building portable waste refrigerant recovery equipment this year and introducing high-efficiency air compressors to reduce carbon at worksites and increase production capacity.

The government is implementing a policy of converting to a low-carbon, high-efficiency energy structure to meet the new international order of carbon neutrality. The ultimate goal of the industrial complex greenhouse gas reduction project is to promote low-carbon green growth at the industrial complex level by making the common infrastructure of manufacturing companies eco-friendly as part of the government's efforts for carbon neutrality.

“It is urgent to support eco-friendly SMEs that lack economic and technological capabilities for carbon neutrality,” said Kim Jeong-hwan, chairman of the Industrial Complex Corporation. There is,” he emphasized.
